The Perks of Being a Wall Flower

Tumblr_mb76t17dpf1qgesf6o1_500_large

This weekend I saw The Perks of Being a Wall Flower, and it was-in a word, amazing.
It was like living inside the pages of an old diary, or a love letter someone has cherished for years.
It captured the feeling of being an outsider in High School-something I know a little too much about-so perfectly. The feeling of fitting in with the people who don't fit in, the small victories, the soul crushing losses, the magic of hearing a song you've never heard as you drink freedom from the open window of a car full of your closest friends as it speeds down the highway. The feeling of seeing Rocky Horror Picture Show back when that was what you did-dressed in drag and went to an outlandish show with your friends, where you laughed at the awkwardness of it all. The feeling of knowing you're broken, deep down inside in some inexplicable way, but realizing that maybe there's hope for you yet. Back when you made mixed tapes for people, and you lived for late night conversations in diners, back when we all knew the answers to the Universe.
We all knew what our lives were going to be like, and we were so unashamed of how certain we were of it.
We knew things, we felt things, we weren't afraid to fall ridiculously in love and we didn't apologize for any of it.
It was a song from my Freshman year coming on the radio during a midnight drive.
It was looking through my yearbook one last time.
It was painful and magical and beautiful.
By far, the best movie of the year.

And remember, no matter how old you get, or what sad things happen to you in this life, the best songs are played with the windows down, in a car with the people you love most in the world, on nights when it seems so obvious
that we are infinite.

The Friday Diary: I Have Today Off, Suckers!

Tumblr_ly42ibkyju1r3zyyqo1_500_large

Happy Friday everybody!
Isn't Friday awesome?
Don't answer that, because I already know the answer, and the answer is fuck yes.
Fridays are especially awesome when you don't have to work.
Which I don't.
Suck it, corporate world.
Today, whilst I am laying in bed reading a stack of books {a chapter or two of each, rotating frequently of course} and eating Chinese food, I will leave you with a nice little recap of the nothing I did this week.

Enjoy.

{It's not Friday until you get down to a little Enrique, ya heard?!}

...

Overheard:
Jackson: Lainie how does honey happen?
Lainie: Bees make honey
Jackson: No, bees make me cry when they sting me
Lainie: Yeah, but they also make honey.
Jackson: I don't believe you
Lainie: They do! They fly around getting flower juice from all the flowers, and that's called nectar. Then they mix it with pollen, which is like their fur, and that makes honey. Then they deliver it to the people and people sell it in stores.
Jackson: I don't believe you still.
Lainie: Then why don't you go ask mom?
Jackson: Because it's none of her business.

Sassy pants.

...

Watched:
Savages_large
Savages.
I was disappointed.
It's the movie a horny 19 year old stoner who loves UFC fights and carrying a hand gun down the waistband of his Hollister pants would write.
Oliver Stone. What happened to you??

...

Worn:

I don't normally do this. Post about the shit I wear. Mainly because I'm terrible at dressing myself.
But I went as a Hipster to work the other day and at the time it seemed noteworthy.
Not as much now.
I don't get fashion.

...

Pinterested:
WORD.

Word.

...

Reading:
Dsc_7621_large

In typical "a million years behind every trend" fashion, I am finally reading this book.
It better be amazing.
I need some amazing, you feel me?

...

Loved:

I got flowers at work on Thursday!
And chocolate.
But I ate the chocolate before I could photograph it.
There's just no time to fuck around with cameras when chocolate is involved, people!
Anyway, Bill loves me. And I'm the luckiest girl in the history of ever.

...

And now for some phone pictures, because I've ran out of real things to tell you about:

1. Taking yet another picture of my son sleeping. Jack will surely be creeped out by all the pictures of him sleeping when he's older.
2. Our kitchen, finally kid-artworked-out. We always have a wall or a pantry door or a somewhere in our house that is dedicated to showing the kids' artwork. Lainie pointed out that we hadn't made one yet in our new house, so we rectified that lickety split. Looking at it makes me happy.
3. A nice round of Candy Land with the kids. I forgot how easy this game is. There's almost no thinking involved at all. Which is nice when it's Thursday night and you're tired. #lazyparenting. 4. Daycare is hard.

Happy Friday everybody!

Titanic and I, 14 Years Later

Tumblr_lxz5drsqyr1qmds3do1_500_large

Titanic re-releases into theaters today, and yes I am definitely going to see it.
I love that movie, and I have since I was 10 years old when it first came out. Ask my sisters and they'll tell you they heard about NOTHING BUT that movie for a solid 9 months after it released 14 years ago. It moved me, quite literally to tears every time I watched it, making me cry the ugly cry much to the embarrassment of my older sisters who went to see it with me, and it made me cry every time I watched it after that over the years. But recently Bill and I watched it together, and I was shocked at the fact that I didn't cry. Not on single tear. I didn't even get choked up.
Wanna know why?
When I saw it in theaters all those years ago, with my sisters, my dad and my then step mom Tonya, I remember sitting there as the theater lights came back on and the credits rolled to a stop, and I was still sobbing.
Tonya turned to me and said
"Although I doubt you'll ever experience something quite that tragic and dramatic, I guarantee some day you will experience something that romantic. If you're lucky you'll experience something even more romantic, something that will make that love story seem small and trivial to you. I promise."
I have remembered those words ever since.
And I think the reason I didn't cry after watching it with Bill was because I finally realized: She was right.
I did experience am experiencing something better.
But it's still an awesome movie

Our Weekend, Or Dear Channing Tatum: I Get It Now

530366_379045538793198_238193809545039_1208234_731188256_n_large

As usual, no pictures of our amazing weekend were taken, but it was a great weekend none the less.
After a full day of cuddling with Jackson and teaching him how to use chop sticks, {which he picked up like a pro by the way} on Saturday, I spent a wonderful Saturday night with Mr. Becker, including a delicious dinner at Blue Burger in Chandler, and a homemade Pizookie {chocolate chip WALNUT, but who's into semantics?!} and a million and one laughs.
Then Sunday we made breakfast, and went to see 21 Jump Street, which was HILARIOUS.
I almost peed my pants laughing.
And as a side note, I have never considered myself one to like "pretty boys"- you know, Abercrombie and Fitch looking jock types, with the All-American bone structure and pale blue eyes that make any cheerleader drop her under-roos before you can say "Prom Queen", and therefor I have never thought Channing Tatum did much for me, and actually totally didn't understand the fascination with him. To be honest I thought he was kind of a shitty actor who just did sappy, low brow chick flicks like "Dear John" and I honestly considered myself "above" a crush on him.
But for some reason, after 21 Jump Street, ladies: I get it.

I GET IT.

Anyhow, after the movie Bill and I appropriately stuffed ourselves on some delicious BBQ, and ended our weekend together with a few kisses and several "I Love You's"
I'm telling you, he's just the sweetest.

It's been a relaxing and fun weekend, right before an awesome 4 day work week.
Thank you Good Friday, and Canadian bosses who give us literally every holiday possible off from work.
Except flag day....wtf, why not flag day?!

Happy Sunday.

Carpe Momentum

Tumblr_lr8diabnxs1qzf3w8o1_500_large

On Saturday night, Mr. Becker and I went to see Extremely Loud, and Incredibly Close based on the book by Jonathan Safran Foer. As soon as I picked up this book, I couldn't put it down. I read it in only a few days, laughing and exploring with the main character Oskar. Feeling my heart break for his heartbreak, and crying my eyes out over the love, the pain, the loss, the confusion and the beauty of this story.
Naturally, I had high expectations for the movie, which is always a mistake when you've read the book first. But a girl can dream.
The movie was good, and if I'd never read the book I probably would've loved it. But I have read it, so instead I just liked it, but it still made me cry and that's always a mark of a good movie.

The thing that touched me the most about the movie, which is a slightly {and maybe surprisingly} less prevalent point in the book, is how short life is.
How we never know, we just never ever know when someone we love with all our hearts could be ripped away from us in a split second. So fast, we're left reeling, wondering how they were just there one second and gone the next. Trying for months, even years to make sense of it all.
We are not guaranteed a tomorrow, or a next day, or a two years from now, and I think that's why the dreams we dream and the plans we make for the future are so precious to us.
The possibility, the hope, the feeling that tomorrow may not come so if it does I want to make it beautiful.
Sometimes we wait too long to make our lives as beautiful as we want them to be. We put things first like work and money and responsibility, which are essential to surviving, but somehow not to living, and that's an important distinction.

And there lies the rub, doesn't it? We put so much off for the sake of work and money and our careers, so we can live in a house, eat food every night and put clothes on our backs, but when the swiftness of our final scene fades to black, there's always that feeling that those things didn't matter. They shouldn't have come first, and the contradictions are endless:
Don't put work first, live your life, but make money so you can eat, but don't focus on money, your career should come second, but take your work seriously, do a good job, move up in your company, provide financial stability for your kids, save for their future, but you aren't guaranteed a future so enjoy what you have now, work can wait, blah blah blah  until I have an overwhelming sense of CARPE DIEM ANXIETY.

How much carpe should my diem consist of?
How do I enjoy every moment and still have a good career, provide for my kids, take care of us financially in case we do live 100 years?

I have no idea.

But, what I try to do and am constantly reminding myself to do, is to find a little joy in every day. Something small or simple to be absolutely in love over.
Taking a walk after dinner with my kids to get ice cream from the corner store, watching them hold hands and count the passing cars as the sun sets over the city in the distance.
Laughing in bed with my boyfriend while we watch inappropriate stand up comedy and cuddle away a stupid fight and a rough day.
Getting a sweet and loving text from completely out of nowhere, that melts my heart and makes me pause for a minute to smile like a dork to myself, in the middle of my super busy day.

I hope it's enough.
I hope it always lasts.
I hope that when my time comes, I will look back at those little simple sweet moments, and feel like I lived a good life, a life I enjoyed and made the most of in whatever ways possible.

Bob Dylan said "Time is a jet plane, it moves too fast".
So I think you have to find little ways of slowing down the blur, even if you can't always make big gestures every day, like skipping work or going on a 6 month vacation through Europe. You can still enjoy bathtime with your babies, or kissing your man hello, or a quiet night with a good book that makes you cry like a baby.

I can't deal with all this Carpe Diem. I prefer to Carpe Momento.Seize the moment, and make the very fucking most of it.

Merry Movie Marathon

So all I'm seeing these days is blog and Facebook posts about what the best Christmas movies are. And I swear to baby Jesus, if I hear one more person say that Elf is THE BEST Christmas movie of all time, I am going to cut a bitch.
Elf is a good movie. It's funny, it's cute, I love Will Ferrel as much as the next gal, but it is by far NOT the best Christmas movie. It's not even in my top five. Because I have exceptional movie taste, clearly.
Here, be impressed by me.

001164_48_large
National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation. By far one of the best movies about Christmas ever made.

Home for the Holidays.
If this picture doesn't sum up this movie, I don't know what will. And the movie more or less sums up EVERY holiday I've spent with my family, EVER.

A_christmas_carol_large
Makes me cry, every damn time.

20090320225653
A Nightmare Before Christmas. This one, for me is both a Halloween and Christmas movie, AND a love story all at once. Triple hitter. Nicely done.

The-family-man_large
This is another one that makes me cry. Also it's from back when Nicholas Cage was a good actor, not a Civil War era vapire/zombie whatever who was marrying the daughters of dead rock stars and making movies like "National Treasure" and "The Wicker Man". Dear God.

Grinch_large
I love the Jim Carrey version of the Grinch. Such a visually stunning movie, and he just pulls off the roll so well.

Love-actually_large
Last but not least, my second all time favorite Christmas movie, and one of my favorite movies in general, Love Actually. There are so many quotable, laughable, tear jerking, heart stopping moments in this movie, it's impossible not to love it.
"Kids, don't buy drugs. Become a pop star and people give them to you for free!"
"Did you ever have this problem? Of course you did, you saucy minx, you."
And my favorite: "Whenever I get gloomy with the state of the world, I think about the arrivals gate at Heathrow Airport. General opinion's starting to make out that we live in a world of hatred and greed, but I don't see that. It seems to me that love is everywhere. Often, it's not particularly dignified or newsworthy, but it's always there - fathers and sons, mothers and daughters, husbands and wives, boyfriends, girlfriends, old friends. When the planes hit the Twin Towers, as far as I know, none of the phone calls from the people on board were messages of hate or revenge - they were all messages of love. If you look for it, I've got a sneaking suspicion... love actually is all around."

This winter I hope you get to watch all your favorite movies and eat all your favorite foods with all your very favorite people.
